Sofija Milić
Sofija is the founder, choreographer and producer of L!CK Dance Theatre.
Born and raised in Serbia and Croatia, Sofija moved to New Zealand at age eleven. She has been a passionate dancer, creator and performer since the age of four, which is when her artistic journey began.
She studied contemporary dance at the New Zealand School of Dance, where she had the privilege of working with and learning from renowned choreographers Sarah Foster Sproull, Ross McCormack, Jeremy Beck and Holly Newsome.
After graduating Sofija worked with New Zealand choreographer Lucy Marinkovich, before relocating to Europe. She was a collaborator and dancer for choreographers Tamara Gvozdenović and Jenna Jalonen while in the SUB.LAB.PRO. Ensemble.
Throughout her emerging choreographic career, Sofija has delved deep into the human condition, constantly questioning her existence, actions, and the morality behind her decisions. These inquiries fuel Sofija’s creative research and form the basis of the stories she tells through her choreographies.
Sofija’s artistic practice is rooted in experimental and interdisciplinary improvisation, as well as durational performance art tasks. These methods allow her to reach into the psyches of both the performers and herself, uncovering raw and honest movement patterns that test the endurance of both mind and body.
Sofija believes art is the leading force of humanity, and has the power to make a huge change. She hopes her creations stimulate complex and deep emotion, challenging the audience’s sense of purpose.
